Full Professor of Chemical Engineering and Director of the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Matteo Maestri is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering and Director of the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He received his Ph.D. summa cum laude in Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry from Politecnico di Milano in 2008. His international experience includes positions at the University of Delaware, the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, and the Technical University of Munich. His research applies chemistry and chemical engineering to energy and sustainable processes, with a focus on catalytic kinetics and multiscale modelling of catalytic systems.
His work integrates DFT calculations, CFD, kinetic analysis, and operando spectroscopy. He received the TUM Ambassador honorary title in 2021, the Gian Paolo Chiusoli Gold Medal in Catalysis from the Italian Chemical Society in 2022, and the Giorgio Squinzi Medal in Industrial Chemistry from the Italian Chemical Society in 2025. He has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant and two ERC Proof of Concept Grants. He is a member of the EFCE Working Party on Chemical Reaction Engineering and an Editor of the Chemical Engineering Journal.
